According to the Colorado State University Research Foundation, termites cause about $11 billion worth of damage in the Unites States. The most destructive type of termite is the subterranean termite, which lives mostly underground or inside of wood. Never ignore the signs of a subterranean termite infestation. If you have any of these signs, contact a Termite Control in NYC service immediately.

Strange Sounds
Every now and then you should tap wooden surfaces like stairs, window frames and doorways. If they sound different, it could be due to termites. Termites eat structures from the inside out. They make a very small hole into a wooden structure and once inside create a series of tunnels. This makes a wooden object sound hollow when tapped.

Mud Trails
Is there a strange line of dirt going up a wall in your basement, living room or any other room in your home? This is a huge sign of subterranean termites. These termites soon die when exposed to heat and sunlight. In order to survive above ground, they make tunnels or mud trails out of dirt and saliva. If the mud trail is still soft, then it has recently been made. Dried out trails are older.

Swarm of Winged Breeders
When it’s time for termite queens and drones to breed, they fly in huge swarms. They are clumsy fliers and soon lose their wings after they breed. If you have a tree that’s covered in winged breeders, the termite colony is too close to your home. Swarms of winged breeders can also appear on your deck, stairs, window frames or any other part in your home where the colony has established itself.

Small Piles of Dirt
If you are discovering small piles of dirt or what looks like sawdust around your stairs, doorways or other wooden structures, this could be a sign of termites. The “dirt” is actually termite feces. In order to keep the colony clean and healthy, worker termites push all balls of excrement out of the colony.
