Tasting Good Like A Cigarette Should: The Story Behind Winston Cigarettes’ Most Famous Slogan...

Winston cigarettes were first introduced by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1954, and Winston quickly became the best-selling and best-loved brand of cigarettes in the US. From 1966-72, Winston cigarettes remained the top-selling brand in the nation due to their popular marketing slogan, “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.” The slogan appeared in numerous types of advertising media, including print, radio and television. Winston cigarettes were also promoted through a number of other outlets, including R.J. Reynolds’ sponsorship of the television cartoon The Flintstones. The two main characters, Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, appeared in commercials smoking Winston cigarettes. R.J. Reynolds similarly sponsored The Beverly Hillbillies as an advertising vehicle for Winston cigarettes. The slogan “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should” was, however, arguably the key element to the success of Winston cigarettes. The phrase was devised by the William Esty Ad Agency, whose executives Wendell Adams and Arline Lunny directed the ad campaign for Winston cigarettes. They had originally proposed the slogan “Winston tastes good like a cigarette ought to”, before replacing it with the final slogan. The first print ads with the slogan began appearing in 1954. The fact that the phrase perhaps wasn’t entirely grammatically sound wasn’t lost on many. Television anchor Walter Cronkite refused to say the phrase on The Morning Show, and a replacement announcer had to be brought in to do the line. A small controversy even arose among grammarians over Merriam-Webster’s citation of the phrase as a popular colloquial usage of the word like. Some commentators have espoused the idea that the phrase’s grammatical imperfection helped it to stand out. While Esty provided the famous phrase to promote Winston cigarettes, it was the jingle that caught the ear of America. The famous jingle, however,...

Various Risks Associated with Oil Investments...

There are many associated risks with oil investments, so it is absolutely necessary to do your due diligence as a potential individual investor to protect yourself. This is true especially if you are new to the industry and desiring to make money while you sleep. There is a reason for the old cliché about the oil man who goes to Vegas for a little rest and relaxation. Oil investments present a risky opportunity, but if done correctly can yield high profits and ongoing liquid cash flow. Consider, therefore, the following risks: 1. Scammers: It is absolutely vital and not an insult for you to question the integrity of the person you are about to do business with, so if he or she is insulted go somewhere else. Minimum oil investments can range from $15,000 to $45,000 per unit, all of which can be lost if you give your money to a con artist. Do your research on the company’s history, successes, the personal character of the well operator, licensing, insurance, and of course failures. Don’t go with someone just getting into the business. Let them learn from their mistakes with other investors. 2. Mechanics: Drilling a hole into the earth to extract hydrocarbon resources, oil and gas, is a complicated process and it should not be assumed that everything is going to go perfectly. There may be problems, poor cementing jobs, striking salt water, and numerous other difficulties that amount to financial loss. That’s another reason you want a company that has decades of experience, if possible. 3. Dry Well: If you are going to make oil investments for wildcatting companies, your risk increases. The chances of hitting oil soon may not be that great, depending on the company and the best educated evaluations...

Steps to Prevent Repeat Injuries...

If you are a star Texas athlete who has recovered from an injury, you are probably familiar with many of the ways that Texas sports medicine can work to cure and heal mild to severe injuries. What many athletes fail to consider, however, is how to take steps to ensure that they do not injure themselves again, and often one might find them back in a Texas sports medicine clinic with the very same injury several months down the line. To prevent this from happening to you, consider the following steps: 1.  Get physicals. Before practice season begins, or even just on a regular basis, go see a doctor and get a physical to make sure you do not have any issues related to your health of which you are not presently aware. Many people, including athletes, have a diabetic condition and do not even know it. Knowing that you have high blood pressure before engaging in any extreme physical activity may in fact save your life. 2.    Take it slow. Don’t jump into an exercise goal full force without any boundaries or limitations. Set a reasonable goal and slowly work your way toward it. Trying to do too much too quickly is a speed train to injury. Mix up your routine so that your entire body is getting a workout over a range of days. Try some low impact exercise as well. Go swimming. Take up mountain biking. Go for a brisk walk in the morning or evening. 3.     Be sport specific. Train certain muscles and tendons to be equipped to take on your particular sport of choice. As an example, you might build up your forearm muscles instead of your biceps if you intend to become actively engaged in playing a...
