One of the most beautiful and best-loved churches in Detroit, MI, is Old St. Mary’s on Monroe Avenue in Greektown. Founded by German immigrants in the 1840s, and rebuilt in grand Gothic style 40 years later, Old St Mary’s strives to both serve the community and preserve Catholic tradition. The age-old beauty and services of Old St. Mary’s can help soothe and heal the hurts you experience from the rapid change and sordidness of the outside world. Because Latin has always been the language of the Church, Old St. Mary’s holds a Latin Mass (Novus Ordo) every Sunday at 10 AM. On the first Friday of every month there is an evening (7 PM) Tridentine Mass, which Pope Benedict XVI has called ” a living treasure of the Church.” The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available every day. For over 100 years, the church has been served by the same order of priests, providing a sense of continuity. The Spiritan Fathers have a long history of ministering to the poor and immigrants, making them well-equipped to serve their diverse congregation. Young people who move to the Greektown area also find a haven at Old St. Mary’s.
