If you have ever found half of your day at the office is spent mentoring and advising staff, management and co-workers or that when your friends are having tea with you they are doing all the talking and you are listening and helping them make life altering decisions, you might have the skills it takes to become a Life Coach. Many people who are midway along in life begin to feel a little lost or even bored with what they are doing and start looking for ideas to make a change. For some, a life coach might be an excellent opportunity. Here are some of the qualities it takes to become a Life Coach:

1. Communication Skills: Many professions require excellent communication skills, however to become a Life Coach this is the number one skill you must possess. In most cases it should be an inherent skill that can be honed as opposed to something you try to learn in a communications course. This is human communication that makes you an excellent listener who can follow along with someone and really hear what they are saying. It is selfless listening that allows you to focus completely on the other person without interruption and more importantly without judgement. As a good listener you will be able to command trust from your clients as well as respond appropriately with suggestions and guidance.

2. Motivational Spirit: A Life Coach has to have a positive spirit that is contagious. You have to be part mentor and part motivational speaker with the skills to keep your clients thinking positive and looking at life with the motivation to succeed. The number one thing that will help your client succeed at work, home, in relationships or even on trying to lead a healthier lifestyle is the motivation to continue on their course with you cheering them on and helping them stay focused.

3. Objectivity: If you are the kind of person who is quick to take sides, pass judgement or snicker when someone is behaving in a way you feel is shallow or ridiculous then becoming a Life Coach will not be right for you. A Life Coach must remain objective at all times in order to offer the best support and advice as well as to inspire trust and a good rapport with clients.

Becoming a Life Coach might not be for everyone. However those who are empathetic, excellent communicators and have the spirit of a mentor can do quite well in this growing field.
