There are a number of signs that indicate that your septic system drain field is having problems and possibly needs to be replaced entirely. Essentially, a drain field that is not working properly is in an at least partial anaerobic state, which means there is not enough oxygen present for waste to break down.
Signs to look for
A clear sign that a drain field is not functioning properly is when the grass over it is greener than the rest of the grass on the property. There may be odors present; there may be plumbing backing up in the rest of the house. When the ground is wet and squishy over the septic field, it’s also a sign that it can’t handle the volume of water it is receiving.
How drain fields clog
Drain fields start to clog when soap, solids and grease filtering through the rock bed and soil begin to collect and prevent wastewater from flowing down into the ground as fast as it should. The excess water, in turn, deprives the helpful bacteria breaking down wastes in the field of the oxygen it needs. Consequently, wastes are not eliminated as they should be, and the system goes into a cycle of decline.
Taking action quickly is key. Sometimes problems can be fixed by a qualified professional, but if the system is too far gone, drain field replacement may be necessary.
