Whether you’re planning on running a groomer to clean up your property, or are running a business that requires well-groomed trails, if you’re just getting started, there are a few tips that will make it much easier to use your snow grooming equipment. Like anything else, using snow grooming equipment does take a bit of practice to get just right. The tips below will help you when you’re just getting started.
How Much Snow
Something that not many people consider when they’re first getting started is how deep the snow should be before it can be properly groomed and still turn out looking and feeling nice. If there are only a couple of inches of snowfall on the ground, you really won’t be able to groom effectively. If you’re using a snowmobile with a groomer attached to the back, you’ll quickly realize that the snow will compress. If there aren’t at least a few inches of snowfall, you’ll find that the groomed trail doesn’t have the right consistency. If there are only a couple of inches of snow, you might end up seeing completely bare spots where the snow has been entirely removed.
Too Much Snow
On the other hand, it’s also possible to have too much snow. If the snow is too deep, you’ll also have improper consistency if you groom right away. What should you do about that? There are a couple of things that you can do. Depending on how large an area you want to groom, you could compact the snow first by running your snowmobile over the trail. Depending on how deep the snow is, you might need to do this one or two times.
Immediately after a snowfall, the snow will generally be a bit deeper. After a bit of time, the snow will settle. If the snow is too deep to groom, you could wait about twenty-four hours to groom it. You may find that the snow is then shallow enough to be able to groom properly.
Think Through Your Trail
Most people groom for specific purposes. Whether you’re running a snowmobile tour business, a cross country skiing trail, or even a ski trail, you’ll want to make sure to plan out your course before you go out. It might be helpful to go on a walk through the area with snowshoes before you drive your snowmobile and snow grooming equipment out onto your trail. If you have problems with people walking or taking their dogs through your trails, that might be something else for which to plan ahead.
How Often to Groom
This is something especially important to consider if you’re running a business. You should groom each and every snowfall. This will help to create a consistent trail that’s great for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or snowmobiling.
