When it comes to network connectivity, you have several choices. Cat 5 Ethernet cable is one possible choice, although now considered a popular but dated one. In stronger contention, in all its updated variations, are Cat 6 cables. If you already have Cat 5 or Cat 5e cords, you might want to consider replacing them with Cat 6 or even Cat 6e cables. There are several reasons why you should think of doing so. They are all discussed below.

What are Cat 6 Cables?

Cat (short for category) 6 was the latest advancement or evolution from Cat 5e. With each increased category number, the ability to process speed faster also escalates – potentially handling 10-Gigabit Ethernet speeds – specifically possible with Cat 6a. So, too does the MHz of the wire used – now at 250 MHz.

In composition, Cat 6 cables consist of 4-pair of copper wire. This makes it similar to their predecessor, Cat 5 Ethernet cables. However, Cat 6 cords actually utilize all pairs. This is not the case with a Cat 5 Ethernet cable. The result is an overall improvement in quality.

On the whole, Cat 6 cables operate faster and have is decreased crosstalk (XT). This is the result of improved quality control. Cat 6 cords possess and internal separator. This acts to keep the pairs of wire strands separate from each other. Furthermore, Cat 6 cables possess a minimum of two twists per each centimeter. The twisting of cables also acts to reduce XT. By improving both the twisting of the wires and implementing internal separators, the designers have made an improvement over Cat 5 cables in the ability to do away with much of the interference actively at work between the cable’s internal (XT), and external (AXT) wires.

The result is obvious to the ear. Overall, the reduction in interference and improvements in speed make it a better option than their Cat 5 Ethernet cable predecessors. Just as important is the compatibility between Cat 5 and Cat 6 cables. If you wish to take a step-forward, you can replace one with the other without undue conflict keeping in mind that many of the same restrictions of usage and length apply. For example, both cables are limited in length to 328 feet (100 m.)

The Role of these Cables

Cat 6 cables play an identical role to that or any previous generations. The major difference – Cat 6 cables simply do it better. If you are replacing older cables or buying new ones, Cat 6, 6a or 6e are suitable options. To place it safe, do your research and check with a professional before you make a decision. In electronics, there is always the “latest” thing coming on the market that may or may not be a better alternative to what currently exists. For more informartion, visit.
