Don’t you just hate it when the company you are in somehow exclude you from the conversation by starting to talk jargon; they are the “in crowd” fully in the know about the meanings of the words they are using; you are on the outside and totally clueless as to what they are talking about. Socially, I mix with a pretty varied crowd of individuals after work in Washington DC and, normally, we sit around over a few beers; chew the fat and get along just great.

However, last week they said to me – “you’re a bit of a photographer; what do you know about association event photography for Washington DC?” I didn’t have a clue; so, I asked them why they wanted to know? It seems a couple of them had been tasked at work to find someone who could do some association event photography for their company in Washington DC and, just like me, they did not know where to start or who to approach.

I Am Still Not Sure; But, I think I Know Where This Might Be Going

These days, an event can be just about anything; in the corporate world, events are usually linked to some sort of marketing ploy; while, in our private lives, it can be just about anything that we might wish to celebrate. In both worlds, the organizers usually want some sort of photographic record of the event. So, event photography makes sense.

But; What Is An Association Event?

I am still guessing; but, here, I think we are entering the world of trade associations where companies with similar products or aims club together for their mutual benefit. This can be sharing generic publicity costs, presenting a united front when it comes to lobbying government for concessions; or, organizing trade shows, exhibitions, fairs and parades or the like. There are even a couple of associations especially for companies that organize trade shows and fairs – the International Festivals and Events Association and the International Association of Exhibitions and Events.

Any association organizing any event has a dual motive; one is to serve the best interests of the association’s members and the other is to make profit for the association. Events of this type are judged to have succeeded or failed on the basis of how many people attended the event. Good publicity is needed to get good attendance. Part of this publicity process is to hire somebody to come to the event and arrange association event photography in Washington DC to record and document the progress of the event.
