There are always a range of options that designers and engineers can consider when developing new technology or improving existing construction material options. A very exciting option for many uses is Inconel 625 sheet. It is a nickel-chromium alloy that is similar in basic structure to the other Inconel family of alloys, but with some very unique properties for a variety of uses.

The Difference

The difference between Inconel 625 sheet material and other Inconel alloys is the addition of both molybdenum as well as niobium. These two elements, which include the presence of tantalum in the niobium, give the Inconel 625 greater strength than those Inconel alloys without those elements. This strength does not need to be developed through hardening processes as it is based on the actual strengthening of the alloy at the molecular level.

Uses of Inconel 625 Sheet

The Inconel 625 sheet is very resistant to all types of corrosion and stress, particularly those associated with use in sea water or in fresh water. It is considered to be one of the best alloys for resisting creep, making it a perfect component for moving parts such as those found in boat and submarine propulsion systems and motors, springs, submerged controls, and many different electronic uses.

In addition with its durability and strength Inconel 625 is also used in the aerospace industry. It is use in engines, duct systems, housings, fuel and hydraulic line sheathing as well as turbines.

In the chemical industry it is found in plant and processing equipment as well as for tubing and heat exchangers, distilling systems and in all types of valves and piping. It can also be found in the reactor-core components in nuclear plants.

Resistance to Corrosion

In all applications Inconel 625 sheet is superior in resisting corrosion. This includes damage from air, water and the environment. It is virtually unaffected by exposure to neutral salts or to alkaline materials.

The corrosion resistance means very minimal damage due to pitting, an important consideration in any type of application. This makes Inconel 625 sheet a very high value alloy for designing chemical waste storage or processing tanks. With little oxidation, even at high temperatures, it is a very safe alloy for these types of applications.
