When To Consider A Plastic Ball Valve

As a quarter-turn valve to control the flow of media through a system, the ball valve is an effective way to both turn on and off the flow as well as to quickly visually check the position of the valve.

This is particularly true with the lever types of ball valves where the position of the lever in relationship with the inlet and outlet port provides a clear visual confirmation that the valve is either on or off. In addition, with the need for just a ninety-degree turn, this is a very quick valve to operate. While it does not allow for refined control of the flow of the media, this is not the intended use of valve and therefore is not a consideration when choosing this valve type.

The Plastic Advantage

There are many different options in plastic ball valve models. The most common plastics used include nylon, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) or epoxy resins.

All of these options in materials can be used to create a plastic ball valve that is resistant to chemicals, resistant to corrosion and highly durable in a wide range of different applications.

Plastic is also a much lighter weight material than brass or stainless steel, which makes it a top consideration with a smaller system and smaller tubes and piping. These valves are often designed to meet the miniature or mini-valve needs, which are usually defined as those valves that are one inch and less in size.

A plastic ball valve can operate on a regular basis, or be left in the open or closed position for extended periods of time. With the durability and resistance of the valve, they do not require any maintenance and very rarely need to be replaced under normal operating conditions.
