Tips for drain cleaning

The drains are the unseen workhorses of the plumbing system in your home, all the flushed waste and wastewater flows through them on its way to the sanitary sewer system or the septic tank. Drain cleaning in Bellingham WA is often necessary as drains can become clogged with a variety of material including grease, hair and food. Keeping the drains clean is not that difficult, a monthly dose of baking soda and vinegar will do it but it won’t remove a clog. If the drains in your home are plugged then go for the plunger or if that doesn’t work; then get a plumbers snake.

As with most things, prevention is the key and in the case of the drains, simply keeping them clean and open is the ideal approach. A cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar and then about four quarts of hot water pushes any sediment down the trap as the chemical reaction of this mixture takes place in the drain. As well as cleaning the drains this mixture moves loose debris, the baking soda keeps the drains smelling fresh and the acids in the vinegar are helpful in disposing of certain pathogens in the pipes.

When the drain does become clogged and backs up, in most cases the drain cleaning in Bellingham WA can be accomplished with a plunger, this will certainly work if there is standing water in the basin or bowl. For a plunger to work properly it requires plenty of suction so remove the stopper from the drain and plug the overflow hole with a wet rag. Once this preparation has been accomplished, a few vigorous pumps of the handle should solve the problem.

If the plunger cannot move the clog then a plumbers snake, often called a cable auger, can be used. This tool has a long cable which is wrapped around a handle which acts as a crank. At the working end of the snake is a hook. To enter the snake into the drain system you must enter via the trap. Remove the trap and insert the snake into the pipe, turn it clockwise as the snake travels along the system. When the hook reaches the debris clog it rips it up so that it can be flushed away when the trap is re-installed.
