Ten Signs It Is Time For A Dryer Vent Cleaning

Every year, clothes dryers are responsible for more than 15,000 fires. They generally result from a buildup of such things as lint in your dryer vent. Cleaning, in Boston by professionals may be one way to prevent a tragedy from occurring. In fact, most fire departments recommend this be done at least one a year. This will reduce, according to some recent research, the loss of 15 individuals and the injury to some 400 annually.

Causes of Dryer Vent Fires

Dryer vents in Boston may result from the following causal factors:

• Failure to clean the dryer exhaust system of dust fiber and lint
• Failure to clean ventilation systems
• Storage of flammable items close to the dryer
• Improperly constructed vents e.g. plastic flexible ducts. The exhaust line may be too long for the dryer and affect the crucial bend to the vent
• Over drying
• Leaving the dryer to operate on its own

These are the major causes. The signs are related to these issues but may be indicated in a variety of ways.

Signs Indicating Dryer Vent Cleaning is a Must

There are several signs that indicate your dryer vent requires cleaning. Among the most common ones are:

• The clothing remains wet or damp after a complete drying cycle
• The length of time it takes to dry an average load is excessive, increasing from 30 to between 35 and 40 minutes
• Without cause, the clothing smell somewhat musty following drying
• If you use softener sheets, the same smell clings to them
• When you touch the articles upon completion, they are very hot to the touch
• The room in which the dryer resides is markedly warm after a normal load in the dryer
• The lint trap seems to have accumulated an excessive amount of lint, dirt particles and other materials
• The same applies for the lint filter
• The hood flap of the fryer vent is not operating properly and it is not a mechanical issue.
