It is possible that one of the most photographed subjects in the whole world has to be babies. People fall in love with their children and from the moment they are born they are photographed multiple times a day by the proud parents and cooing family. From the delivery room to the first tooth there are a whole host of albums dedicated to that child and each picture is a milestone in the life of that baby.

Many photos of babies are usually candid shots, simply because you can’t make a baby pose for photos at least until it’s old enough to understand that it has to sit still when required. This can make for some of the best photos in the world but it can also destroy a treasured family portrait.

The best way to take controlled photos of your baby is to wait until they are relaxed and happy. A sleeping baby is obviously not going to hamper the efforts of a photographer to get a good shot, so sleeping babies are a good target. However, if you want your baby wide awake and cheerful, wait until the best time of day. You will know your babies moods and behavior within a short time of their lifespan, getting used to their patterns. You can tickle them, make sure it is fed and then judge the best time to shoot pictures in a studio, if that’s what you intend.

Suggestions

Make your baby comfortable so that it doesn’t fidget during photo sessions. If it has nothing to complain about it will be still and calm and in a happy frame of mind for a happy photo. Hold your baby firmly, if it is a newborn and direct it so the camera can see it. If the baby is slightly older and able to sit up and play you can get some superb shots of it just doing its thing. Give it some toys to play with and you will have some incredibly candid shots for your album.

Alternatively, try to go for some of the shots that are a little outside of the box. Originality is a great way to inspire people and if they see that you took a shot they would never have thought of you will receive high praise. Try photographing your baby from different angles, in different settings and with different outfits on. Going for shots that are unique is also fun. For baby photography NYC area, you could sit your baby with the Statue of Liberty in the distant background and have it look as though your baby is leaning against it. Funny and comic shots are always a favorite. For serious pictures you can also use unusual places and settings to get the perfect picture of you and your family.
