There is little doubt that the majority of those that run for exercise would much prefer to do it during the day when they can see and be seen. Unfortunately, the demands of work and life in general often make night running a must. Face the traffic:
A big mistake, one that can easily end in disaster is running in the same direction as traffic. You want the cars to see you of course, but you must also see them; always run facing traffic, this will give you advance warning that you have to get out of the way, avoiding a potential life threatening accident.
* Wear light colored clothing:
You would think that this tip is pure common sense but unfortunately there are runners that go out dressed in dark clothing. You need to take all the precautions you can; wear light clothing, only run on a well lit route, wear hat lights and a reflector vest to ensure you are easy to see.
* Turn off the music:
Many runners love to “zone out” when they run; one of the ways they do this is to listen to music. This might be fine during the day but not at night. A combination of reduced vision and hearing can lead to an unfortunate accident.
* Keep it simple:
If you plan on running ten miles give thought to running a five mile loop twice or a two mile loop five times. It is always a good idea to stay reasonably close to home, you can get back quickly if need be and chances are you are familiar with the territory.
Enjoy your night run to the fullest, wear hat lights, wear light colored clothing, avoid any distractions and try to keep your run local.
