There are many companies that are involved in the contract manufacturing of supplements; there are also millions who rely on their output. Some people take nutritional supplements as a preventative measure while others take them as a corrective measure. For the consumer to make wise and educated decisions about nutritional supplements it is helpful to start with the understanding that there are many different types and they all serve their own specific purpose.

Antioxidants have the job of encouraging the production of free radicals. Many people take these nutrients because free radicals have been scientifically linked to the prevention of cell damage, which happens as skin ages. Antioxidants are believed to prevent certain diseases and premature aging. Good examples of antioxidants are vitamins E and C; these vitamins are consumed either as a liquid or tablet.

Amino acids are important in the production of protein, which is important in the maintenance of muscles and mental health. There are two types of amino acids, those that cannot be produced by the body, these are known as essential acids; non-essential acids are those that are produced naturally by the body. Both essential and non-essential amino acids are required to produce protein. Those involved in the contract manufacturing of supplements know that many amino acids are available in meat, but as there is a large population of vegans and vegetarians as well as those who for religious reasons cannot consume certain meats, supplements are essential.

Many people take nutritional herbal supplements as a result of their beliefs in traditional and holistic healing. Ancient civilizations such as the Chinese, Indian and other Asian ethnic groups have long known that certain tree bark, roots and mushrooms have healing qualities. These products are well known for their ability to aid in the healing of skin diseases, sexual problems and mental problems.

Many nutritional supplements are aimed at lifestyle circumstances; people often take a combination of different supplements when dieting for example. When an individual diets many of the natural nutrients that one would expect from food can be found missing. There are certain people of certain age groups that also may benefit from special nutritional boosters, for example, elderly individuals who still maintain a healthy and active life.
