Transmission repair can be very costly. Since repairs can range in price from as little as $75 up to $4, 000 or more, educating yourself about the basics can be valuable when taking your vehicle in for service is vital. A basic understanding of the main parts of a transmission, and different types of repairs can help you avoid unnecessary repairs and even save you money when repairs are needed.

Main Parts of the Transmission

Although there are many little parts inside of a transmission, there are 4 main parts you should know about – the bell housing, gears, transmission fluid and filter.

* The bell housing is a cone-shaped metal case that is mounted under your car. In a front-wheel drive vehicle, it is located on the side of the engine underneath the hood. In a rear-wheel drive vehicle, it is located underneath behind the engine. Very seldom does the bell housing require repair as its sole function is as a case for the transmission.

* The gears are broken down into two types – main gears and planetary gears. All need to be working properly for the transmission to function. Damaged or worn gears are often reasons for repair.

* The transmission fluid is one of the most important elements of an automatic transmission. Failure to maintain proper fluid levels can cause a number of problems. Fluid leaks are one of the most common reasons for transmission repair.

* The transmission filter helps to keep the fluid clean. Clean fluid helps to keep the wear and tear on the transmission and its smaller parts down to a minimum.

Common Repairs

As with other parts of your car, there are many different repairs that may be required. Some of the more common ones are replacing the shift point solenoid (in computerized vehicles) or vacuum modulator (non-computerized vehicles), leaks caused by loose bolts or wear in the gaskets, seals and transmission lines, issues with the linkage cables, fluid flush and basic internal and external inspections.

Before bringing your car in for service, check the reputation of the shop you intend to use by asking for their credentials or references, checking with the Better Business Bureau and asking to be shown their ASE certifications.
