An Optometrist in Chicago Can Help you Choose Computer Glasses

When you do most of your work on a computer, it’s quite common to experience symptoms such as blurred vision. Looking at small print on a computer monitor can be hard on the eyes, much more so than looking at comparable material on a printed page. If you’re under 40, blurry vision while using the computer may be due to a decreased ability to focus.

If you can’t focus quickly and accurately, you can end up with headaches and eye strain–two other symptoms of computer vision syndrome (CVS). Below, you’ll get some tips on what to do to make your eyes work more efficiently while you’re using the computer.

Get Computer Glasses

You might not believe it, but special computer glasses can make a tremendous difference. These custom-designed eyeglasses are intended to cut eye strain, giving you comfortable vision while working online. Even if you already wear eyeglasses, you should consider getting some just for when you’re using the computer. When you’re sitting in front of a screen, your eyes are usually about two feet from the screen, in the intermediate vision zone.

Most people use eyeglasses to correct distance vision, or to correct near vision. Bifocals can correct both conditions, but neither type of glasses are designed for the intermediate zone. Without the correct eyewear, computer users can end up with eye strain, blurry vision and headaches–and many try to compensate by leaning forward or looking through the bottom of their eyeglasses. Unnatural postures can lead to other symptoms such as neck pain, backaches and shoulder pain.

Are Computer Glasses Worth the Cost?

Various research answers this question with a resounding “yes!” Not only can they decrease the risk of CVS and increase comfort, computer glasses can raise productivity and reduce errors caused by vision issues while working. There are a variety of lens designs that work well for computer users; because these lenses are specially designed, they aren’t for everyday or driving use. If you use the computer often and think you need special glasses, your Optometrist Chicago can help you find a lens design that suits your needs.
